Your first osteopathy visit

Knowing what happens makes it easier to relax and get the most out of your appointment. Here's how your first visit works, step by step.

  1. Before you arrive

Bring a list of any medications, and any scans or reports related to your problem. If you plan to claim through insurance, check whether your plan needs a doctor's note.

  2. Talking it through

Mohammad will ask about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, your general health, and your goals. This conversation shapes everything that follows.

  3. Assessment

He'll watch how you stand and move, and gently test your joints and muscles. The assessment usually looks beyond the painful area, because the cause is often elsewhere.

  4. Treatment

If osteopathy is right for you, treatment usually starts in the first session. Each technique is explained first, and you can ask to stop or change anything at any time.

  5. A plan for what's next

You'll leave with simple exercises or changes to try at home, and an honest idea of how many sessions you're likely to need.

What to wear

Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, such as shorts or leggings and a T-shirt or tank top. Some techniques work best directly on the skin; you'll always be asked first, and you're welcome to stay clothed.

Insurance coverage

Many extended health plans in Canada include osteopathy. Coverage and requirements vary, so check with your provider about your annual limit and whether you need a doctor's referral to claim.
